Toning lotion: what is it for and how to use it properly?

Lotion tonique bio à l'eau de rose et à la camomille

Between makeup remover and serum, there is a step that many people skip: the toner. Is it really useful? For which skin types? And how should it be used correctly? We’ll fill you in.

What is a toner?

It is a leave-on liquid skincare product applied right after cleansing. Once very alcohol-heavy and astringent, modern toners are now formulated to be gentle and soothing, often based on floral waters like rose or cornflower water.

What is its purpose?

  • Perfecting cleansing: it removes the last traces of makeup remover, limescale, or impurities.
  • Rebalancing the skin: tap water and certain cleansers can disrupt the skin's natural balance; toner helps restore it.
  • Refining the appearance of pores and giving a fresher complexion.
  • Preparing the skin to receive serum and cream.
  • Helping makeup stay on longer.

How to apply it?

  1. Cleanse your face morning and evening.
  2. Pour the toner onto a cotton pad, or directly into the palms of your hands.
  3. Apply it by gently smoothing the cotton pad from the center of the face outwards, or by patting with your fingertips. Don't forget the neck.
  4. Follow up with your serum, then your cream, while the skin is still slightly damp.

Tip: store your toner in the refrigerator for a refreshing morning effect, ideal for a slightly puffy face upon waking.

For which skin type?

  • Combination to oily skin: it is the ideal step for limiting shine and refining the appearance of pores.
  • Dry or sensitive skin: choose an alcohol-free formula with soothing active ingredients.
  • Dull skin: it brings a real boost of freshness to the complexion.

How to choose the right one?

Prioritize a short list of ingredients, without drying alcohol, with gentle active ingredients. Our organic rose water and chamomile toner helps refine the appearance of pores, leaves the skin fresher and less shiny, and prepares the skin for subsequent treatments.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Rubbing hard with the cotton pad: facial skin is fragile.
  • Replacing cleansing with toner: it complements, it does not cleanse on its own.
  • Choosing a formula that is too alcohol-heavy, which dries out the skin and can cause a sebum rebound effect.
